Something About Summer

It's summer. I mean, it has been for a few weeks, but now it's really getting hot outside, and you're getting into that, "I'm perpetually sweating" time of year. I like it.

There are things you do in summer that you don't do the rest of the year. I don't know, maybe because I'm a summer baby, there's just something about summer that makes it seem like not real life. It's muggy and dreamy. In the summer, I am compelled to be more daring, I am more relaxed, and I am reminded to enjoy all the little stuff. Like going to a used bookstore in the afternoon. Or eating ice cream on a hot day. Biking with friends to the edge of town. Summer is grand.

I tend to change my tastes in reading in the summer too. A dark fairytale retelling sounds great to curl up in bed with hot chocolate in the winter. But in the summer, I'm turned off by heavy, thick tomes with complicated plots. I am, for whatever reason, really into chick lit. I almost never read chick lit during the rest of the year. It's a real odd quirk about my reading habits. This week alone, I've checked out a girly book and bought two others on my Kindle. I can't get enough of those "beach reads." Basically, in the summer, I'm looking for slim, witty, charming novels that I can get through in an afternoon.

I wonder if anyone else's reading tastes change with the seasons?

  1. I don't know if my reading tastes change with the season, but I definitely know what you mean about that feeling of SUMMER. I'm a summer baby too, so maybe this love of summer is in all of us. :) It's definitely my favorite season. Ice cream, swimming, lazing around - I just feel so much more alive!
